Equipment

  • Moroccan tea pot (or regular teapot)
  • Small saucepan (for boiling water)
  • Strainer (if necessary)
  • Tea glasses or small cups
  • Spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Chinese green tea Gunpowder tea
  • 1 handful fresh mint leaves around 10-15 leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 4 cups water
  • 3-4 tablespoons sugar adjust to taste

Instructions

Boil Water:

  • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a small saucepan.

Rinse the Tea:

  • Place the green tea (Gunpowder tea) in a teapot. Pour a small amount of boiling water (about 1/4 cup) over the tea leaves, swirl for a few seconds, and discard this first rinse. This removes impurities and bitterness from the tea.

Brew the Tea:

  • Add the fresh mint leaves and sugar to the teapot with the tea leaves. Pour the remaining boiling water over the ingredients.

Steep the Tea:

  • Let the tea steep for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Mix and Aerate:

  • Traditionally, Moroccan mint tea is aerated by pouring the tea from a height into glasses. Carefully pour the tea from the teapot into a glass, then pour it back into the pot. Repeat this process 2-3 times to mix the tea, dissolve the sugar, and create a frothy top layer.

Serve:

  • Pour the tea into small glasses, garnish with additional fresh mint leaves if desired, and serve hot.
