  • Saucepan
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Milk frother or steam wand
  • Measuring spoons
  • Coffee grinder (if using whole spices)

Ingredients
  

For the Chai Base:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 black tea bags or 2 tsp loose-leaf black tea
  • 3 green cardamom pods crushed
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1- inch piece fresh ginger sliced
  • ¼ tsp black peppercorns
  • 2 tsp honey or to taste
  • 1 star anise optional

For the Coffee:

  • 1 shot espresso (1 oz)
  • Milk foam for topping
  • Ground cinnamon for garnish

Instructions
 

Prepare the Chai Base:

  • In a saucepan, combine water and spices
  • Bring to a boil and simmer for 3 minutes
  • Add milk and black tea
  • Simmer for 2 more minutes
  • Strain the mixture
  • Add honey to taste

Prepare the Espresso:

  • Pull a fresh shot of espresso

Assembly:

  • Pour the hot chai into a large mug (about ¾ full)
  • Add the espresso shot
  • Top with frothed milk
  • Sprinkle with ground cinnamon
